Never fear, your lungs are hard at work doing that now. If you're referring to the fumes from the burning plastic that is. From the nose to the tiniest respiratory bronchiole the goblet cells are secreting mucous to flush out the irritating substance. Whatever you incidentally inhale the lungs can clear out.That being said the inflammation might take a couple of days to go away. Depends on what the irritant was and the amount inhaled.
Permanent damage can be caused by things like mustard gas, chlorine gas etc.Chronic exposure to coal dust, fiberglass, smoke from burning vegetable matter will also do permanent harm.
