how do i transition my 19 day old bunnies over to pellet food ?
They are nursing and eating ox bow timothy hay, and starting to show
interest in mom's blue seal show hutch deluxe. But they can't reach the
food yet. this is my first litter, any suggestions. Should they even be eating the food yet, and if not, when?
If they try to eat it, let them. As long as you aren't forcing them to eat pellets, and they are doing it on your own, it is perfectly fine and will not harm them. They'll start experimenting with mommy's food at about 3 weeks or so. They still can't go without nursing, but let them have hay and pellets. I'm not sure if you have wire bottom cages, but place some on the floor or in a short bowl. If they are still in the nest box, I think that they are too big to remain and are old enough to bother mom and explore the rest of the cage (That is, providing they can't fit through your cage walls. Your nest box must have tall sides if they can't reach food. Or you have a separate compartment, and in that case you can add some food to that side.
Eating pellets won't harm them. They have to eat it sometime. Make sure to provide alfalfa hay and timothy hay for the babies until they are 3 months. Don't let them eat treats until 5 months.
Also, around this time, they will realize that they can drink from the water bottle and it won't run away from them like their mother will.
