What constitutes a set piece in a movie?
Does anyone know if a dance sequence/ensemble in a film counts as a set piece? I know a car chase does as does an explosion. What about a dance set that will include 10 or 20+ dancers, a band, an audience, etc. Thanks.
Well, I think you have the terminology a bit incorrect. Set Pieces in a film refer to the physical environment where a scene takes place. Driving and crashing cars is a 'stunt' that can happen on a set, dancing also can happen on a set, but the action is by definition not the set itself.
We refer to any action during filming as...well just that, Action. A SCENE is a larger compilation of smaller action sequences...for instance: in this SCENE, a group of 20+ DANCERS are dancing, when through the windows of the building a CAR CRASHES through and the dancers scatter just in time to avoid the EXPLOSION that follows. (the caps are often in the script like this in order to show how the different sequences will play together).
Filming the SCENE above might be broken into different 'shots' or camera 'setups'. I'd imagine that it would be shot something like this, and in this order:
DANCING sequences= camera setup #1 (though it may take 5 setups to get the coverage the director needs ie: closeups, wide shots, isolated detail shots, and reversals if any)
CAR CRASH sequence= most likely there'd be a "B" camera team outside doing the driving shots and possibly the approach to the building. (bigger budgets might have the whole sequence done live in one take) The car would CRASH thru the window and the stunt doubles for the dancers would react and start fleeing then it would all come to a stop. then: reset to
DANCERS FLEEING= dancers would be reset and would react to crash and begin running away
EXPLOSION= clear the set, move all personnel out of the building or set, rig the explosives and effects and 3,2,1 BOOM.
Now in editing we see this cut together and we have a SCENE that is similar to what's described above but in the correct order.
You are correct that dancers could be referred to as having a SCENE, a CAMERA SETUP, or SETUP, ACTION, or SEQUENCE...but not generally a SET PIECE.
